Excerpt from my book American Badass. If you read the book and liked it, dont forget to render a positive critique on Amazon. Many Thanks in advance! “You shall not be afraid by the terror of night, nor of the arrow that flies by day” —Psalm 91.53 I heard the buzzing of the rotor blades as the birds landed on the roof and waited for someone to tap me on the shoulder to tell me it was time to go. I waited and waited and waited and nothing. Amidst all of the noise, chaos, and darkness, it became evident to me that I was alone! I reached back with my non-firing hand, hoping to feel a team member behind me, but...nothing. I reached back with a leg and tried to sweep and feel for someone...again, nothing. I heard the PDF sneaking up the stairs, and I thought, “Well, shit.” As I look back to that moment, it reminds me of the scene in Aliens when the Marines are barricaded in a room and the aliens are coming in through the ceilings, just feet and seconds away. That’s how I felt as I heard the PDF stepping on crushed glass and speaking in Spanish, saying, “despacio” (“slowly”), “con cuidado” (“be careful”), and “hay un hombre muy peligroso arriba” (“There’s a badass up there”). Okay, the last line was a joke, but I realized that this might be the part in my life’s story where I became a POW and would get to practice all my cool counter-interrogation techniques. Or that this might be the part where I threw down some lead-hate and ran like a scalded dog up the stairs, hoping like hell a ride was waiting for me. I liked option two better. When I exited the annex, I saw my helo sitting on the roof. I ran over and, to my surprise, someone else was sitting in my seat. I looked around for more seating when the interloper realized he was on the wrong bird. He ran back to his, and I gladly took what was mine, ready to call it a night. I had no idea it wasn’t over yet.
