Excited over Pak win, Islamabad boy suffers brain haemorrhage Loses 12- day battle for life at SMHS hospital Ecstatic over the victory of his favourite Pakistan cricket team over India in a recent Asia Cup encounter, Zuhaib Mushtaq, 13, started celebrating without realizing that his excitement could turn into mourning for his family. As he was expressing his joy by bursting crackers and shouting slogans in favour of his favourite team, along with his friends, he suddenly fell unconscious and went into coma. He was shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar where doctors diagnosed him of having suffered brain haemorrhage, very rare in that age. After remaining hospitalized for around 12 days, Zuhaib finally lost the battle for his life. The doctors termed Franto- Parietal bleed as the cause of his death which they think may have been caused by excitement or anger from extreme emotions. “ There is a possibility that this boy had underlying Arterio- Venous Malformation ( AVM), which ruptured because of acute rise in Blood Pressure, due to excessive sympathetic stimulation by excitement,” says Dr. Rouf Asni, Additional Professor Neurology, SKIMS Soura. Zuhaib’s father Mushtaq Ahmad Kuchay cannot believe that his son, a class 8th student at Montessori High School, Islamabad ( Anantnag) is no more. “ Zuhaib was a die- hard fan of Pakistani cricket team and would remain glued to television and not miss a single ball when his favourite team played,” says Kuchay, a resident of Dangerpora area of South Kashmir’s Islamabad ( Anantnag) town. He said that during that tense Indo- Pak match Zuhaib turned pale when Pakistan lost quick wickets. “ It seemed they will lose the match, but as Shahid Afridi, Zuhaibs favorite player, turned the tables and snatched a near impossible win, he was over the moon, jumping in excitement,” says Kuchay. He said that he went out and started celebrating out with his friends on the streets. “ He along with his friends were bursting crackers and shouting slogans but soon our neighbours came rushing in, informing us that he had fainted,” says Kuchay. “ We ran out and took him to the District hospital where from he was referred to SMHS hospital” Zuhaib, according to his class mates, besides being good in sports and other co- curriculum activities, was equally good in studies. “ He was a genius, particularly good at Maths and Computers and we used to call him computer,” say his classmates. They said that he was an expert in setting right the software and hardware errors of computers or cell phones. Kuchay however, takes his son’s death as the will of God. “ Zuhaib was not only dear to us but to our neighbours and his teachers as well. He was a very sensitive boy. But ultimately life and death are in His hands and you have to accept that,” says Kuchay. Zuhaib besides his parents is survived by a younger brother and an elder sister.
