Exodus 29:35-37 35 “Thus you shall do to Aaron and his sons, according to all that I have commanded you. Seven days you shall consecrate them. 36 And you shall offer a bull every day as a sin offering for atonement. You shall cleanse the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to sanctify it. 37 Seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and sanctify it. And the altar shall be most holy. Whatever touches the altar must be holy.[a] Wednesdays with Moses How do we approach a holy God? Given the detail and significant effort necessary to prepare Aaron and his sons as priests, it’s clear that God was preparing His people to understand the wide gap between Him and them. Their sinfulness stood as an enormous barrier between them and the God they worshipped. The image of all the washings and sacrifices shows just how wide that gap really is, and it leaves us with two critical realizations. First, we can see the amazing breadth of Christ’s sacrifice for us. He has bridged the enormous chasm between us and God—a gap that demanded perfection and sacrifice. But we should also let this picture teach us a deep respect and honor for our God. Yes, He is the God who dwells with us, even in us, and He engages us in our daily challenges. But He is God, the same God who stands well above our sinful existence. We must fear Him and rejoice that He has opened the door for us to know Him. – Dr. Mike Clarensau serves as Senior Director of the Healthy Church Network of the Assemblies of God.
