Expatriate Moment #62 Back home Two weeks ago, I came back from a 2 week holiday in France. I went to see my parents who have been living in the same house for 40 years. Same village, same neighborhood, same region. A semi-rural area. Nothing changed. The houses, the forest, the fields, the roads. Everything was so familiar. It was as if I’d never left. A strong feeling of deja vu. At first I felt like a regression. Going back in time, I remembered 30 years ago, passing by the local primary school. Nothing exciting. Nothing new. Nothing to discover. Just everything expected. Well in place. A few details struck me though: the varied and melodious bird songs, the pale color of the sky. I compared mentally with Tasmania. In a sense, it can also feel comforting, safe. While our world is living at an even more accelerating pace, where towns, cities and plants are erected in a few months in China, you can still come back to the good memories of your childhood, find the places, smell the air and resource yourself. I wonder how it is for you. Have you had the chance to go back "home" this year?
