Explanation of Shanghai traffic: No one looks before crossing the road. No one cares if theres a car there when changing lanes. Horns are never used for stepping into traffic, only traffic which should be moving but isnt. Then they are used liberally and with great zeal. For cars, bicycles, or pedestrians, the trick is: look straight ahead and if something is directly ahead of you, you stop. Crossing the road isnt like Frogger (unless youre too much a Westerner which can be an entertaining sight). Locals play it more like chicken. Except youre playing with everyone, and just acknowledging the existence of the person/bicycle/rickshaw/vehicle barreling toward you makes you lose.
