Exploitation and pester power...A warning from history. uboat-collection When is 50p not 50p? When it suckers you in to spend nearly a grand with the Ive started so Ive finished mentality. I rarely watch TV - adverts, even less so, because most broadcast media is dead. However, whilst waiting for my client to prepare, theyd left the TV on and this advert caught my ear. You get suckered in for 50p; then it swiftly rises to £5.99 a week. Wait for it - there are 150 weeks worth of magazines of kits to buy. I quickly did the maths - yep, for a for quid shy of £900, you can have your own 1:48 scale U-Boat to sit on a shelf. £894! For an upmarket airfix kit that you have to wait three years to build. Words fail me. For the record, you could buy a real, decommissioned Russian sub of the cold war era, complete with nuclear torpedoes for little more than triple that that AND get it towed to the UK and open up your own tourist attraction... I really dislike the way these seemingly small, weekly sums are used to sucker people in. Combined with the way small print is used, along with auditory and visual misdirection from the commentary and zooming in, is used to render the presence of the admission almost obsolete. My suggestion: buy a kit from a model shop for £50-£100 and a book on U-Boat history and build it to your timescale. I help people understand their behaviour and how they want to change how they feel. Many clients spend upwards of £3,000 on cigarettes per year. If I stop them smoking for the next thirty years, Ive helped them save £90,000. And my fees are a lot less than a submarine kit that will take you three years to complete... Until next time, down periscope ;-)
