Exploration of the Western Desert of Egypt. I own a really rather embarrassingly large collection of books about exploration and defense of the Western Desert. There are very few books out there that I now want - my collection is nearly complete. However a recent acquisition was the super Wheels Across the Desert by Oxford University Professor of Geography and President of the International Association of Geomorphologists Andrew Gaudie (published by the Society of Libyan Studies, 2008). I could very easily go on about how much I am enjoying the book, which is very well written, includes some lovely excerpts and is so nicely put together, but instead I will just share three photographs from the book that made me smile in completely different ways. The photo of Italian Fascist Marshal Rodolfo Graziani made me laugh out loud on the tube when I saw it and read the caption.
