Explosion in USA on Tuesday, Description Fifteen hundred students at Johnson & Wales University were evacuated from their dormitories early Tuesday morning after two large underground electrical vaults exploded nearby, according to the Providence Fire Department. No one was injured in the explosion, which did not appear to cause damage to the nearby dormitories except to knock out the power, according to Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph R. Desmarais. Firefighters got the call at 4:30 a.m. The explosion was so loud, he said, an officer from the Rhode Island School of Design reported hearing it. Desmarais said the vaults each measure 15 feet long by 10 feet wide by 30 feet deep. The sidewalk and concrete above the vaults was ripped and damaged by the explosion, which happened at Pine and Page streets. Students in Snowden Hall and another seven-story dormitory were lead outside to a common area while firefighters determined the buildings were safe. The buildings still have no power, Desmarais said. Desmarais said the explosions took place in a location that is very busy during the day. He said the explosion was unrelated to Johnson & Wales.
