Exposition & Subtext Week three of Intro to Playwriting at the Irish Writers Centre this week and well be looking at Exposition and Subtext. I dont know whos quote it is, possibly Mamet (although he generally says never write exposition), but the quote Im thinking of goes something like, exposition is about getting as much information as you can past the audience without them noticing. Mamet does say, The audience needs to understand what the story is, and if the hero understands what he or she is after then the audience will follow it. So heres a great scene from the man himself (with strong language), which, if you dont know the play at all, leaves you in little doubt as to whats going on.
