External power in our personalities is validated by others around us, and needs this ongoing validation to survive. When others compliment and praise us, they “reaffirm” our existence emotionally, and fortify our self-esteem. That is why so many of us hoard things, and cling to people who give us this power. Despite the ups and downs, emotional swings, and the damage to relationships occasioned by our craving and clinging, we generally do not look beyond, and pause to question. It becomes so much a part of our nature that sometimes we are not even aware of this. Love and Light!
