Extreme Weather in USA on Tuesday Description Heavy winds speeding down Lake Michigan from the north and northwest will bring high waves and make swimming dangerous on Chicago-area beaches today. According to the National Weather Service, waves could be as high as 10 to 12 feet, with some higher than that, as the cooler air in the cold front moves over the warmer waters of Lake Michigan. The areas at the southern end of the lake are most vulnerable, along with places that are close to the lake, like some spots along the bike path on the Chicago lakefront. According to the agency, "rogue waves" could get up to 15 feet and those are high enough to sweep an unsuspecting biker into the water. Rip currents are also expected, and the agency warns that people visiting beaches should stay out of the water. The agency issued a beach hazards statement regarding the potential dangers today; that statement is in effect from 9 a.m. today through Wednesday afternoon. The cold front will bring cooler temperatures to the area today and for the rest of the week. Today’s high is expected to only reach the high 70s, according to ChicagoWeatherCenter, and Wednesday is expected to be as little cooler than that.
