FACE-book My video addresses the issues of privacy, vulnerability, surveillance, exposure, and intimacy in a way that is more politically flavored. With social media and the Internet becoming a part of our daily lives, it has simultaneously become much easier to invade the privacy of others. However, by being active participants of these websites like Facebook, we are the ones who are ultimately publicizing our information on a global platform, thus making ourselves subject to surveillance. This means that individual lives are becoming much more “vulnerable” and much less private—as if somebody is looking at the user through the computer screen every time he or she accesses his or her account. Not only is Facebook (the company) watching us, but it is also its users, the government, and corporations. My video begins with a take of me in bed (which is in my own bedroom), which is symbolic of among the most private objects/places that I could think of—so much so, that in order to share my bed with someone else, that person must be someone that I am very close to. The video, nonetheless invites the viewer into my bedroom, allowing he or she to see it just as it is. Even the pajamas and the unkempt hair were all real products of sleep. Though some may find portraying themselves in their most “natural” states on screen, I believe that this was fitting in tapping into intimacy. The catch though, is that my face isn’t shown until Facebook is opened. The unveiling of my face (right after I had woken up) establishes a sort of causal relationship with Facebook as it occurs right after I type in the domain name. This is when I begin my attempt at creating sounds that are somewhat unsettling, but not too cheesy. I layered a sound of a man breathing, a news coverage about the NSA spying on us, a low-end rumbler, and a “dronal” synth of some sort. All of this becomes progressively louder, suggesting the increasing vulnerability with continuous browsing. All of this can only be stopped once when we close our laptops and stop using it. In attempt to replicate the enclosed, private, bedroom-like space, I tried to find a place that is somewhat “small” and cozy. It made most sense to me to utilize Mars’s studio for my project, since it had four walls, with a desk. The desk would be moved to the center of the studio, and the audience could ideally view the video with earphones that will add to the isolation required to replicate the enclosed space. As the viewer watches the video on the laptop on the desk, the goal would be to have them feel as if they are experiencing what the character on-screen (me) is experiencing. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Hits56 Radio _______ FB: r-js/1rlggeQ / TW: r-js/1us3SdS / Listen to LIPSapp Hits56 Radio r-js/1dOIQ18 #thewho #beatles #elvis #jimihendrix #dylan
