FACEBOOK UPDATE: Many of you have been casting doubt as to the sincerity of Facebooks apology saying that nothing seems to have changed since our meeting two weeks ago. Actually Facebook has come out very publicly in our support claiming that they do not require people to use our legal names but want users to identify as our authentic selves, like we do in every day life, which includes using a chosen name, a protective name or a name other than that on our legal ID. In our meeting with Facebook we were able to prove to them - and get them to admit - that as it currently stands the legal name policy and THE REPORTING PROCESS allows people to target accounts for using what they consider fake names. What weve been able to accomplish is that Facebook is implementing changes to the user interface and language around the use of authentic names versus legal names. On a much larger scale they are also developing software that will be able to authenticate a user as being a real person without requiring any form of ID. This high level technology takes time. THIS IS FAR FROM OVER. I am 100% committed to finishing what I started. I speak with Facebook every week and they assure me they are working diligently on the changes - and I believe them. I have no idea how long it will take them to work everything out but it could be months. In the meantime the only way we can all figure out how to get our community back online is to have someone at Facebook personally review each account. Please DM me or email me at [email protected] if you need help getting your account reinstated or your name changed and I will forward your information on to Facebook. Thank you for your patience.
