FACT...... 22 veterans each and everyday commit suicide. Lets assume for just a second that You right now reading this are 1 of 500 friends on my facebook friends list. Do you realize how long it takes 500 of Americas children to be killed at a rate of 22 people per day? It takes 22.72 days for each and every one of us to be wiped out. Less than one month. Why are they committing suicide? Because they dont feel as though they serve a purpose anymore once they take the uniform off....... The military takes all that you knew and all that you were and adjusts those traits to fit to what the military needs. They teach you how to survive combat, and they make sure you do not forget it. There are punishments put into place when you forget how to conduct yourself as a soldier....... The problem with this? When you get out of the service it is hard to fit in with folks that have never been through it. They teach you how to put the uniform on, but you are never taught how to take it back off. Friends dont understand how or why you think the way you do. Family feels helpless to try to bring you back to who you used to be. Everybody just decides to give you space, you know........ just to work through your issues...... The problem with that thinking? The human brain is a dangerous place to venture into by yourself. Just like the friends and family members who felt defeated that they dont know what is going on with their loved one, the soldier feels defeated and abandoned...... They know they are different, but what they dont understand is why are they all alone. Why is there nobody there to help? How did I go from having purpose and direction to nothing? The solution...... Put down whatever insignificant trinket you are playing with and pick up the phone..... Call your veteran friend and let them know that you love them and you would like to see them. Tell them that you may not understand what they are going through, but you want them to know that you care. All you need to focus on is getting this person through just one more day. Each and everyday it should be your mission to try to carry just a little bit of the load. Not because they are a veteran that deserves any special treatment, but because we are human beings and sometimes we just need help. Does your friend have issues? Your damn right they do........ Go to the places we go, see the things we see, do the things we do and lets just see how normal you turn out. I love you all as my neighbor. No need for ice buckets or videos, or donating money..... I challenge you to be a considerate and empathetic human being. Please dont say you support veterans if you are only going to do it half ass. Peace be with you all
