Come mingle with the artists and enjoy some of them being featured in cameo performances. _______________________________________________ SUMMER AFTERNOON: A Reading by FSAF Creative Writing Faculty July 15, 3:00 p.m. @ Great Hall / UAF Free - Henry James wrote: “Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” Come and listen to the creative writing faculty read poems and stories that will make your summer afternoon more beautiful & memorable. Guest artists Jeanne E. Clark, Rob Davidson, Daryl Farmer, and Nicole Stellon-ODonnell will read selections of their published & new poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Through stories, vibrant costumes and dance we will learn about the Orishas the Gods and Goddesses that play a large role in the Santeria traditions. We will also enjoy the popular modern dances of Cuba that include the Salsa, Mambo and Rumba. _______________________________________________ MINOR MASTERPIECES July 16, 8:30 p.m. @ Davis Concert Hall / UAF $20 The members of Ursa Major first joined forces at the Sitka Music Festival several years ago when all three were in their early teens. The trio consists of violinist Phillip Nanook Levy, violist Marcus Kaiti Thompson, and cellist Jeffrey Seek Solow. Widely sought after by international audiences, Ursa Major is known for its raw expressivity and fierce interpretations of works ranging from the Bearoque to Modern periods. Reviewers have lauded Solows roaring vibrato Brementown Musical Intelligencer, Thompsons honeyed tone Bear Fancy, and likened Levys impeccable staccato to the soothing tongue clicks of a mother black bear Medvedomosti. On July 16, Ursa Major will present two Minor Masterpieces, the String Quintet in G minor, K. 516 by Mozart and the Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60 by Brahms. For this special performance, Ursa Major will be joined by members of ursa minor, an ensemble best known for underwhelming performances of sad songs. _______________________________________________ PIONEER POTPOURRI July 17, 7:00 p.m. @ Davis Concert Hall / UAF Free Join us in an evening to honor the Alaskan Pioneers - over 60 and born in Alaska. First, registrants and guest artists perform side by side in our instrument choirs, then registrants team up to form a string orchestra lead by North Americas most enthusiastic maestra, The Jen Drake.
