FAJ Resolution on the Current Crisis engulfing its Regional Affiliate, EAJA We the members of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Steering Committee meeting in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, from 24- 26 January, 2015 in relation to the current crisis engulfing EAJA Recalling Article 2 (1) of the FAJ Constitution which states: The Federation of African Journalists shall be the policy body that decides every aspect of policy and working programmes concerning journalists’ rights and professional journalism in Africa; Further Recalling Article 2 (3) of the FAJ Constitution which states that FAJ shall work to enforce trade union development in the media industry in Africa, to address professional matters, to protect and defend freedom of expression and information as well as journalists’ human rights as laid down in the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa; Bearing in Mind Article 3 (7) of the EAJA Constitution, which outlines the ideals to promote the development and strengthen independent and democratic journalists trade unions and associations in the Eastern African region; Reaffirming the fundamental principles of equity as an undeniable and inalienable human right, as a corner stone to trade unionism and as a means of ensuring respect for all human rights and freedoms; Considering the great benefits and professional development that the project work offers to the journalists unions and associations in the Eastern Africa region and the journalists in the region Deeply Concerned about the continuous allegations of financial mismanagement that have rocked EAJA for the past years; Noting with Concern the outcome of the Bujumbura EAJA extraordinary General Meeting, which resulted in the creation of two executive Committees Considering that all efforts to reconcile the two parties have not generated the satisfactory results; The FAJ Steering Committee decided unanimously to: i) Suspend the two executive committees; ii) Put in place an interim committee comprising Maria Luisa de Carvalho Rogerio, (Chairperson) Vice President of FAJ, Credo Tetteh steering committee member of FAJ, Eric Oduor, Secretary General of Kenya Union of Journalists, Al Sadig Al Rasagi President of the Sudanese Journalists Union, and Gaspard Safari, Former President of Rwanda Journalists Association; iii) Give mandate to the Interim Committee to organize an Extraordinary General Meeting under the supervision of FAJ in April 2015 in Kigali involving all affiliate journalists unions and associations to usher in a democratically elected leadership iv) Instruct Omar Faruk Osman Nur to pay with immediate effect 61 000 USD as debt claimed by Pinnacle Agency in Kenya; v) Urge EAJA affiliates to respect and accept the decisions that FAJ has labored to undertake after very frank deliberations that were centered on justice, equity, tolerance and transparency; The FAJ Steering Committee vows to: i) To take drastic measures on any party in the crisis that intends to undermine its efforts in ending this crisis and bringing tranquility and sanity back to EAJA The FAJ Steering Committee also wishes to: i) Note the EAJA Petition against the IFJ President, Jim Boumelha and strongly urges him to refrain from unwarranted political interference in the Eastern African region; Done in Kigali, 26 January 2015
