FASHOLA INSPECTS AYOBO-IPAJA ROAD, APPEALS TO RESIDENTS FOR PATIENCE. DE FASH MAGAZINE · As NNPC Pipelines, building on setbacks hamper construction work Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday undertook an inspection of on- going work at the Ayobo- Ipaja road in the Alimosho Local Government, appealing to the residents for patience to enable government deliver a road that will not endanger their safety or flood in the near future. Accompanied by his Deputy, Hon (Mrs.) Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire and conducted round some of the challenging portions of the construction work due to the presence of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Fashola stopped to interact with residents of the area who had gathered on his arrival. He invited the Commissioner to explain directly to the people, the challenges being faced on the road but which some of the residents misunderstood as undue delay. According to the Commissioner, there are two sets of four Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines which were situated about 50 metres apart around the area called Pipeline Road along the construction path. He said due to the inability to determine the depth of the pipes which even several trips of State officials to Abuja could not resolve, manual survey and digging had to be done to avoid any accidents that could cause explosion. The Governor, who then explained further, said the state government needs all the support it can get from the NNPC and patience from the people to complete the road. “Our contractor is here. They have been paid, they have been mobilized, but there are safety issues. Please bear with us, we will solve this problem but these are the problems we have been facing”, he added. The Governor who recalled the pipeline explosion that occurred in Ijegun in 2010 said the project is delayed because of the NNPC pipelines which the corporation cannot establish for the state government the depth of the pipelines. He added that all the drainage has been cast but cannot be inserted. “They can’t establish for us the depth of their pipes, so all the drainage has been cast, you will see the brick cast drainage because if there is no drainage, there is no building a road because flood will take away the road again.” He explained that there is no point building a road because flood will take away the road again, adding that it is the same problem that is occurring at Ayobo where the people have built on the setbacks hence leading to government having to establish an outfall about two kilometres away. “We have to create an outfall away from the road almost about two kilometers as long as the section of the road in order to be able to create a drain. We want to solve the problem but two things we don’t want to do: we don’t want to give a road that floods because you are impatient, we don’t also want to give you a road that will take lives because you are impatient, so we have to work according to plan”. “If they come now, they have pipelines of gas or fuel under the section. This section is a low point where flood gathers, we have to do the drain. We can’t excavate for the drain because we don’t know how deep the pipe is”, he said.
