FASHOLA URGES THE INFORMAL SECTOR TO EVOLVE A SURVIVING BUSINESS PLAN The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola has urged members of the informal sector comprising of Artisans, Tradesmen and Women to evolve a surviving business plan and culture that will not only prosper the originator but that can also be bequeath to posterity in such a way that the businesses will continue to thrive long after the demise of the original owner of the business. He said business owners should stop shying away from involving their children in their different vocations, adding that such practices had contributed largely to the impoverishment of the informal sector in particular and the economic prosperity of the country in general. Governor Fashola gave this advice at the Grand Finale of the 5th Tradesmen and Artisans’ Week And Graduation ceremony for re-trained artisans and traders held at LTV Blue Roof, Alausa, Ikeja with the theme “Sustaining the Growth of the Informal sector: The Lagos Model.” The Governor reiterated that the concept of poverty is not the absence of money alone but the inability to have proper organization of businesses with the appropriate conduct that attracts customers. Citing the instance of producer of the popular Coca-Cola drink that began as a small family business some years back, Governor Fashola said that the sustainability of the Coca-Cola business up till the present day is evidence that the initiators of the idea bequeathed the business secret to their posterity. He said that the acquisition of formal education in the modern day Nigeria should serve as an advantage and add colour to the way businesses are handled; transform business activities to a better customer relations as against desiring white collar job at every cost. Fashola said that part of the rationale behind the training programme being sponsored by the State Government was to assist artisans, tradesmen and women alike to further hone their skills in a more professional way that would enable them compete favourably with modern day demands and international expectations. He used the occasion to advise members of the public to register with the State Resident Registration Agency, LASRRA in their own interest, stressing that the registration will not only propel businesses to thrive with ease but could also salvage Lagosians from some hiccups in future. Fashola also debunked the rumour that members of the informal sector may not be beneficiaries of the housing initiative presently in place in the State, saying that Lagos Homs is an initiative for all lagosians who have a viable means of livelihood and those who do not stand the chance of defaulting in their mortgage agreement. He, however, said that everyone should be realistic with whatever accommodation choice they will choose such that the accommodation type will be within their income. It is worthy of note that a total number of 5,780 members of different registered Associations made up of 3,780 Artisans and 2,000 Traders from various vocations and Trades have been trained by the State Government to date.
