FASTING: In the Catholic Church we have two days of obligatory fasting; Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is not everyone who is supposed to fast though. The following are exempted: pregnant women, those breastfeeding, the sick, those 60 yrs of age and above, the holy childhood (0-14yrs). On these days you are only to take one meal in the evening and it is not to be a mountain of a meal to eat in arrears, but just something moderate, to help you regain your strength. The rest of the day before this meal you can be taking fluids. Fasting goes hand in hand with prayer and alms giving. so it is not fasting for its own sake. You are not to postpone meals but you are to share with others what you will have sacrificed during your fasting observance. I hope today you will try to fast. Remember, it is not optional, but obligatory.
