FBI Norfolk CAAA members Maurice Browne, Lee Kimble, Nancy Newlen, Mary Sanderfer, Terry Donald and Cookie Hal Ketchum recently assisted during a FBI Basic Crisis Negotiation Course instructed by Norfolk Field Office special agents. Honing their acting skills, these CAAA volunteers portrayed an enraged barricaded subject holding an infant hostage, a potential suicide jumper, a drug crazed subject with a knife at a pharmacy, and an emotionally disturbed person with deep psychological challenges. Coached by experienced crisis negotiators, the role players were guided by a script but given poetic license to challenge students with colorful language and verbal judo. In the end, students felt more prepared to calm a crisis situation, avoid “hot button” issues, and work with a multi-faceted team to protect the community. Members of the Norfolk Chapter of the FBI CAAA often volunteer as role players during FBI Norfolk Field Office Training. SWAT, Crisis, Post Blast, WMD, Active Shooter, Tactical Medical, Interview and Interrogation, and many other course deliveries have been enhanced with the valuable assistance of our CAAA “Theater Troupe.”
