FEARNE SONGS ON POSTCARDS (Album) 2013 Stir Records Songs on Postcards is the third album from Bournemouth based folk/indie band Fearne. I had the pleasure of listening to this album in the car, a place in which I felt it performed at its best. The production of the release is superb, every guitar strum crisp, every vocal laid down with clarity, all helping to create a perfect platform for this experienced and highly talented band. Listening through, it is interesting trying to gauge the similarities between Fearne and other more well known bands. At some points I can hear touches of Stereophonics, track three is almost an Arctic Monkeys song and later on I can’t help but make a comparison to Ed Sheeran’s work. Either way though, Fearne have a consistent and compelling sound. Stand out tracks on the album come in the form of ‘These Games (were made for kids like us)’ with its gentle approach, smooth driving baseline and anthemic chorus, this track is simply gorgeous, everything in its right place, excellent drum work and vocals to die for. ‘About Her’ also demands some attention. A heart felt ex-love song, the descriptive nature of this track hits the nail on the head and is sure to leave a lasting impression on many a broken heart. To wrap it up, Songs on Postcards is a triumph. A thoroughly melted marshmallow in a creamy cup of cocoa. Spot on!
