FED UP: If we strike Syria and break its army, what happens to 2 million Syrian Christians? Does anyone care [see previous post for full article]? It is common cause that the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar initially funded and supported the Al-Qaeda affiliates (incl. ISIS) currently fighting Assads Syrian regime. ISIS, of course, has rebranded itself the Islamic State and is in the process of cleansing Mosul, an ancient city in Iraq, of its Christians. QUESTION: What is going on here? What is the role of the U.S. and its allies in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine? Whose interests exactly would be served by the balkanisation of Iraq and Syria? Why did the U.S. pursue regime change in Ukraine and this via neo-fascists? Whose interests did this move serve? Tell you what: I want to know. I am so sick and tired of ordinary, well-meaning Christians being lied to by governments and interest groups, in the interests of empire. Pastor-theologian Brian Zahnd likes to point out that, in addition to personal sin, we need to confront areas of systemic sin. Zahnd also says things like: The catastrophe of Constantine subverting the kingdom of God was that the politics of Jesus were set aside for the interests of empire. I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. CHRISTIANS: Let us embrace the peaceable kingdom of God. For, our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Eph 6:12. Ditto for the South African context. Let us pray accordingly and work for peace and justice. Let our hope reside in Gods kingdom, which operates not through coercion but via love and grace. Let us come to know our belovedness in God. I know that I always need a sense of my own belovedness in order to heal on the inside and love others and set aside my rights and interests for their flourishing. Otherwise, Im just angry with the world.
