FEELING OVERWHELMED? PART I: Are you feeling overwhelmed today? Does it seem no matter what direction you look in in your life, there seems to be unresolved matters that need tending to? Does it seem as soon as you deal with one thing, another problem crops up? Have you adopted the “if it doesn’t rain, it pours” attitude? If so, stop right now, take a deep breath and then ask yourself this question ... (1) Is the problem actually mine to own? Sometimes we can get so caught up in emotions, that we lose sight of what is really going on. Sometimes we want to take automatic ownership of something because we truly care about the person who may have raised the problem with us ... it is human nature to want to fix things, especially when it causes a loved one distress. God places huge emphasis on showing compassion to others – but do not confuse showing compassion, with wanting to do His job for Him. Showing compassion means to show sympathetic pity or concern for the sufferings and misfortunes of others. It doesn’t give us an automatic right to try and fix it. By trying to control the situation, we are taking away dependency upon our Heavenly Father and we are depriving Him of trust by trying to resolve it ourselves. Whether the problem be yours or another’s, the first thing you should do is talk to Him about it by way of prayer. Sometimes, we lose sight of what is really going on and our judgment can become clouded. Remember, we only have snippets and Heavenly Father has the full picture. So who would be the best person to resolve anything? You or God? Some things are not what they appear to be. Sometimes, no action on your part is even required at all and whatever is happening, may just have to be unfolding to lead on to bigger and better things. Don’t take on other people’s problems. Heavenly Father may be putting them to the test for character-building in terms of their refining process with Him. You are not qualified to refine anybody! Instead, show sympathy or concern, be supportive of them and say to them – I will pray for you. But never take on another person’s burdens – we could be interfering with what ‘just has to be’ in terms of their walk with God. And you will have enough to do when facing your refining process with Him. The thing to remember is that we are ALL a work-in-progress. Who assesses the progress at the end of the day? Whose opinion is the only one that will matter on judgement day? Yours or Jesus Christs’? We need to glorify our Father in Heaven. We need to say to those who come to us to lift their burdens that we are not qualified to do so – but that you know someone who is. So if are finding that there are unresolved issues in every direction you look in in your life, then try looking ‘up’ – that’s where you will find all you need to find your calm after the storm.
