FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR SLSJ GRADUATES Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ) and SECTION27 are pleased to announce the SLSJ-SECTION27 Fellowship Programme, which will commence in January 2015. The SLSJ-SECTION27 Fellowship will enable two recent LLB graduates interested in social justice, to work in a public interest law centre for a year in order to facilitate a better and more sustainable skills transfer by exposing them to strategic thinking on legal and social justice issues and how to use the law to achieve social justice. The successful fellows will develop research, writing and legal skills through conducting both policy and legal research for SECTION27’s policy, advocacy and litigation work. The fellows will be expected to provide ongoing logistical guidance, strategic support and mentorship to the SLSJ National Committee and will assist in consolidating the relationship between SLSJ and SECTION27. The programme will commence in January 2015 and end in December 2015. The fellows will be required to work from SECTION27’s offices in Johannesburg for the duration of the programme. All recent graduates and final year law students are invited to apply. FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS AND INSTRUCTIONS The Application must include: • A Curriculum Vitae and a cover letter detailing the applicant’s interest in, and suitability for, the fellowship; and • An example of any relevant piece of writing of no longer than 1500 words. Selection Criteria: Candidates are required to possess: • An LLB from a South African university; • A history of involvement with SLSJ; and • Good research and writing skills The following are some of the attributes which will assist a candidate in their application: • A commitment to issues of social justice and evidence that the applicant has been involved in social justice work; • Knowledge of SECTION27’s mandate and work areas; • Proficiency in one or more South African languages; • A commitment and ability to fulfil the one-year term envisioned by the programme; • The ability to contribute towards the work of Section27; • The ability to provide guidance and institutional advice to SLSJ; • An aspiration to pursue a career in human rights law; and • A valid driver’s license. Note: As an organization that strives to achieve substantive equality, candidates falling under “designated groups” in terms of the Employment Equity Act, no 50 of 1998 will be given preference. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the incumbent SLSJ Ex Officio, the incumbent Fellows and one person from an external organization. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Executive Director of SECTION27, other SECTION27 staff members, and one member of the 2014 SLSJ National Executive Committee. The interviews will take place in the first week of October 2014 at the SECTION27 offices in Braamfontein after which the Fellows will be selected.
