FEMINISTS HELPING FEMINISTS [TW] rape, rape culture, rape apologists Email reads: My best friend got raped 3 years ago, January of 2012 (she was 15) and pressed charges on the rapist (also 15 at the time). I am a witness in the case, because i was in the area during the event. I was down the street getting dunkin donuts, aware that my friend and this boy were alone together, but unaware as to what was happening. After, he admitted to raping my friend in facebook messages, also saying he deserves any punishment he gets, and we used that as evidence against him. He pleaded not guilty, of course, but we won the case. My friend is very forgiving and very kind so she let him off easy, i dont remember what he got convicted of in the end of it, but i remember it was a slap on the wrist compared to what he could have gotten convicted of. I remember he had to write her an apology letter, read the book Speak (even tho he already read it in school, making it very creepy that he did the same thing to my friend as It did to Melinda and also reading the depression Melinda experienced afterwards but not caring that he did the same thing to my friend) and he had to do some community service. BUT he requested an appeal for the case and got the appeal. Even tho we have evidence against him where he CLEARLY admitted that he raped her. Now we have to go back to court again. Do cases get appealed often? Do you think rape cases are appealed more often than other cases? Do you think this is an example of internalized misogyny within the judicial system?
