FENCING TIPs: Endurance Endurance running means a change from tempo runs to faster intervals and repetition runs, such as shuttle runs. This features increased acceleration and deceleration while emphasizing the change of direction that fencers need during bouting and competition. As the season moves to the pre-competition period, relay drill shuttle races using cones, rings, and speed ladders are a fun way to get young fencers to improve their speed. Normally, if a speed activity is maintained for a short time, 10 seconds, it requires an active rest of twice as long, or about 20 seconds. If the activity is 60 seconds long, the active rest is for an equal amount of time, or 60 seconds. When youths work in teams of three or four, they get an adequate recovery period between repeti¬tions, while still staying engaged.
