[FG ADVISED TO INCREASE ALLOCATION TO EDUCATION] ---------------------------------------- The Federal Government has been urged to, as a matter of urgency, increase revenue allocation to the education sector and overhaul school curriculum, to accelerate the nation’s technological and industrial development. This suggestion was made by the Chairman of the Governing Council of the African Church College of Education, Babatunde Adewale Odufuwa, while addressing journalists on: “Enhancing the standard of Tertiary Education in Nigeria,” as a prelude to the graduation ceremony of the college Lagos. Odufuwa pointed out that the present system of education in the country had lost touch with the technological development and revolution going on worldwide because of obsolete curriculum. Said he: “Nigeria needs to re-overhaul its educational curriculum and methodology in order to develop her human resources or else, Nigeria will lag behind,” stressing that the type of education being given to students in secondary schools and the tertiary institutions could not provide the technological needs of the nation, while infrastructural development was not matching the growing population. According to Odufuwa, the present educational curriculum overloads the students with too many subjects, as a result of which they only memorize their notes and other educational materials given to them by teachers, just to pass their examinations. He explained that the level of education a nation attains, determines the standard of its technological development, and urged the government to double its present funding to education. With the Board Chairman at the briefing were Rev. Deji Sogbamu, Dr. Adelaja Omofade, Rev. Ayoko Babatunde, Prof. Felicia Etim, Archbishop Segun Enigbokan, Secretary of the African Church and Mrs. Folashade Erinle, Provost of the college. Odufuwa, an Engineer advised the government to look into how education funds were being disbursed in order to serve its purpose, adding that government should be specific in its intervention roles in education by giving every Nigerian child the opportunity to the educated.
