(June 10, 2014, Santa Maria, Lompoc, San Luis Obisppo, Santa Barbara) Chris Rupp, a 25-year-old firefighter from Wisconsin will be helping with a surprise wish presentation on June 13 in Santa Maria as part of his 6,000 mile epic bicycle ride across the country to raise funds and awareness for Make-A-Wish®. He will arrive on June 12 at fire station 4 in Santa Maria and spend the night before departing on June 13th to continue his ride. Follow his journey at https://facebook/CoastToCoastforMakeAWish Oscar Lopez of Lompoc is 15-year-old boy and lives with severe cerebral palsy. Oscars type 1 cerebral palsy with spastic quadriplegia affects his entire body. He also has scoliosis and a generalized seizure disorder. Oscar is quadriplegic and is unable to walk or communicate verbally. He smiles warmly in the presence of loved-ones. Oscar is a happy, sociable young man who loves to go on car rides, enjoys therapeutic horseback riding and moving to music with a strong beat. Oscar’s parents are no longer strong enough to carry Oscar and now experience tremendous difficulty in taking him on car rides because of his size. Oscar’s volunteer Wish Granters worked with Oscar’s parents to determine a wish that would bring Oscar hope, strength and joy, and decided on a a van mobility lift so Oscar can once again go on family outings. Cruzin’ for Life (Santa Maria), Tri-County Regional Center (Santa Barbara), La Vista Foundation (Baltimore) , Make-A-Wish America (Phoenix), Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary, Lompoc Elks Lodge, Adaptive Driving (San Luis Obispo) all helped Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties grant Oscar’s wish. The family van has been away to have the lift installed and it is now ready to be presented. Oscar’s family has been invited to meet Chris Rupp on the morning of June 13th at Fire Station 4 in Santa Maria to help Make-A-Wish and Battalion Chief Alan Widling send Chris of on the next leg of his journey to raise funds for Make-A-Wish. They will send Chris off, but not before discovering that volunteer Wish Granters Hilda Trigueros and Rob Bronte are not there only to help them see Chris off, but to present Oscar with the van lift, and that their van is ready and waiting for them at the fire house! Rupp began his journey in Seattle on May 28 and is planning to arrive in Miami on August 17. His goal is to raise $100,000 for Make-A-Wish. Rupp will be staying in firehouses throughout his trip, stopping in 72 cities across the country. After his stop at fire station 4 in Santa Maria on June 12 he will arrive on June 13 at Fire Station 12, 5330 Calle Real, Goleta, CA 93111 to be hosted by Capt. David Sadecki and his crew. Cruzin’ for Life (Santa Maria) raises funds for local charities that serve people with cancer. Cruzin for Life adopted Oscar’s wish with funds from the fund a need portion or their 2014 Cruzin’ for Life dinner. Tri-County Regional Center (Santa Barbara) worked with La Vista Foundation (Baltimore, Md), Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Club and Lompoc Elks Lodge to secure grant funding to help with Oscar’s wish. Tri-Counties Regional Center provides supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities living in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties so that they may live fully and safely as active and independent members of our community. Make-A-Wish America (Phoenix, AZ) provided special grant funding to Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties to help fund Oscar’s wish. Adaptive Driving Systems (San Luis Obispo) provided a discount on services and organized all parts of the lift installation. Adaptive Driving Systems specialize in vehicle modifications and work with a variety of manufactures and products and they installation, repair, and service of all major mobility equipment products. With the help of the entire community, Oscar’s wish has come true.
