Members of the Fire Brigades Union will walk out between 6am and 8am and again between 5pm and 7pm in a protest with the Government over their pay and pensions. The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has put contingency arrangements in place to provide cover during the strikes. Firefighters are also set to strike on the following days and times: Tuesday 15 July from 6am to 8am and from 5pm to 7pm Wednesday 16 July from 6am to 8am and from 5pm to 7pm Thursday 17 July from 6am to 8am and from 5pm to 7pm Friday 18 July from 6am to 8am and from 11pm to 1am on Saturday 19 July Saturday 19 July from 11am to 1pm and from 11pm to 1am on Sunday 20 July Sunday 20 July from 5pm to 7pm Monday 21 July from 6am to 8am and from 5pm to 7pm Chief Fire Officer Andy Fry said: “The forthcoming period of industrial action will take place over eight consecutive days, so it is vital that people take extra care to reduce the risk of fire and to stay safe on the roads during this time. As before, we will still be answering and responding to 999 calls but we will continue to prioritise ‘life critical’ incidents, such as house fires and road traffic collisions where people are trapped. “Most of the industrial action will take place during times when you are likely to be travelling to and from work, so if you are driving, please reduce your speed and give yourself time to react to hazards. “You may also be cooking for yourself or your family during these times. Whether you are in the kitchen or having a barbecue, fires can start very quickly, so never leave cooking unattended. “During the industrial action, you can also help us as you have before by only calling 999 during a genuine emergency. For non-emergencies, please call the relevant organisation – for example, a locksmith if you are locked out of your house or the local authority if a tree has fallen in the road. If you do have a fire, our advice remains to get out of the house, stay out and call 999. The eight day strike follows a period of industrial action held on July 10, where firefighters joined teachers, teaching assistants and council workers to protest about pay.
