FIRST TIME EVENT FOR NEW BERN! PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE. Available at: Craven Arts Council at 308 George St Greater Good Gallery at 228 Craven St. Trent River Coffee Co. at 208 Craven St. New Bern’s first storytelling and folk festival is set to take place from Friday, October 4 through Sunday, October 6. The three-day event will be held at various venues throughout downtown New Bern and will h...ighlight some of North Carolina’s most diverse and talented artists in an effort to expose the community to traditional and contemporary forms of folk music and storytelling. The New Bern Storytelling & Folk Music Festival will provide a weekend to enjoy intricately woven stories and finely crafted music, combining two age-old traditions for one weekend filled with eclectic and enriching experiences. With beautiful outdoor and historic settings like the Isaac Taylor Garden and James Reed Lane, and two cultural staples of downtown New Bern, the renovated Bank of the Arts and Trent River Coffee Co., the festival will highlight timeless music--ranging from bluegrass to African to Appalachian folk. Locals will share original stories and poems, rounding out the festival with riveting displays of spoken word. The festivities will begin on Friday night, featuring a night full of events on Craven St. and boasting an impressive array of musicians like Tom Maxwell—formerly of Squirrel Nut Zippers—-and the tender bluegrass tones of The Barefoot Movement. Singer-songwriters Rebekah Todd and E-S Guthrie will open the evening with their soulful contemporary folk music. The show will begin at 7:00 pm at the Isaac Taylor Garden (228 Craven St.) and tickets will be $15 in advance (available at the Craven Arts Council at 308 George St.) and $20 at the gate. Trent River Coffee Co. (208 Craven St.) will also host Asheville’s guitar-cello folk duo The Moon and You at 7:00 pm with a $5 admission fee at the door. Saturday will bring an entire day of free events from some of New Bern’s most beloved singer-songwriters and storytellers at one of the city’s long-standing supporters of folk music, Trent River Coffee Co. At 1:00 pm the coffee shop will house a slew of highly esteemed locals and will feature folk troubadours Matt Frye and The Johns from Brooklyn, N.Y. North Carolina made jewelry and local artists will also have crafts on display. While the day’s festivities will come to a close at 5:00 pm, the Craven Art Council will host a free event at the renovated Bank of the Arts (317 Middle St.) featuring renown Sengalese musician Diali Cissokho, providing an intimate solo performance. Cissokho plays a 21-stringed kora, an African harp-lute that produces an ethereal sound, filling the airwaves with mystifying rhythms as Cissokho crosses cultural boundaries while providing a contemporary take on his traditional West African roots. The Bank of the Arts’ rich acoustics will serve as the perfect compliment to Diali’s soaring vocals and mesmerizing instrumentation. Seats are on a first-come first-serve basis with doors opening at 6:00 and the show beginning at 7:00. Sunday’s events will parallel the all-day arrangements of Saturday, with free daytime performances taking place at the iconic James Reed Lane on Pollock Street and will be presented by Carolina Creations. Storytellers and songwriters begin performing at 1:00 pm, featuring locals Penne Sandbeck, Zach Dunham, Meg Wethington and 14 Strings along with many other diverse artists and special guests. The festival comes to a close on Sunday night at Trent River Coffee Co. with the old-timey harmonies of the Appalachian folk trio, The Swayback Sisters. The doors open at 6:00 and the show will begin at 6:30 with tickets costing $10. Advance tickets are available at Trent River Coffee Co. and the Craven Arts Council. youtu.be/alizZn7Y9hk
