FIRST U STANDS AGAINST MARRIAGE INEQUALITY IN INDIANA. For many years, efforts to enshrine marriage inequality in the Indiana constitution have failed to progress. However, in the 2014 legislative session, Indiana lawmakers can choose either to table or vote down the amendment or send it to voters for a statewide referendum next November. A broad coalition of voters, Indiana mayors, businesses, faith communities, and educational institutions have gone on record urging legislators to vote against HJR-6 and keep it off the popular ballot. Based on the congregational recognition that Civil Marriage is a Civil Right, and in support of the 25-30% of our congregants who live in Indiana, the First Unitarian Board of Trustees has voted to join this coalition (Freedom Indiana).
