FOND MEMORIES OF A GREAT EDUCATOR Mark served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer as a secondary school teacher at the outstanding Magburaka Boys Secondary School. His principal as James Sumana Fanna who passed away on October 6, 2014. He was a wonderful man and guided me on my first assignment as a teacher. He trusted me to teach s number of A & O level courses. He trusted me as a dorm master - an amazing responsibility for a 21 year old just out of college My memories of him of a friend & mentor. Below is his obituary. James Sumana Funna, a school teacher who graduated from a primary school teacher to become the Principal of the Magburaka Secondary School for Boys and who later became Education Attaché at the Sierra Leone High Commission in London was given a brand respect at a special funeral ceremony at the King Memorial United Methodist Church, Regent Road in Freetown on Friday 3rd October 2014. Aged 88, the late James Funna was widely known as a teacher who gave education to many young people in the Northern Province. He was later appointed Secretary of the University of Sierra Leone. J. S. Funna may also be remembered alongside Dr. John T. Kargbo, R. A. Kanu and I.B. Kamara as the educational gurus who emanated from the Northern Province at a time when many Northerners were struggling to acquire higher education. He graduated from the Maurice Browne College in America in the Early 70s and later acquired a Master of Arts degree from the Atlanta University in the State of Georgia, USA. His public service record shows that he was highly respected not only within the educational circle but also Government circle as was clearly emphasized by a letter written by the former Secretary to the Head of State, Mr. S.A.T. Bayoh who among many tributes stated as you leave the University, Mr. James Funna, I would like you to know that most of us who knew and worked with you are satisfied that looking over your long and enviable career in the Public Service, you have ably made your quota of contribution to the development of this our beloved country. Before his death, the late James Funna was in the process of compiling his autobiography using the knowledge of those people who knew him and with whom he had worked.
