FOOD FOR THE SOUL: JAN. 20, 2014 Todays Devotional (UPPER ROOM): Cookie Wisdom Testimony of Glynis M. Belec (Ontario, Canada) “Grandma, what’s this?” Jocelyn asked, touching a white, stray glob of shortening that had fallen on the counter. Before I could stop her, Jocelyn picked up the glob and tasted it. Her face contorted into an expression of disgust. “Yuck, Grandma. Don’t put that white stuff in the cookies!” I helped Jocelyn wipe off her greasy fingers and tried to assure her that this “yucky stuff” was necessary in order for the cookies to turn out right. “But, Grandma, it doesn’t taste like cookies,” she insisted. My granddaughter and I talked about how all the ingredients by themselves might taste “yucky,” but if we followed the recipe and mixed the correct measurements for each ingredient, we would end up with delicious chocolate-chip cookies. Reflecting on that conversation, I thought about how we are the ingredients in God’s perfect recipe. Some of us might be a little yucky once in a while, but God has blessed each of us with different gifts and abilities. Some of us are supposed to teach, while others are given the gift of healing. The Bible points out that if one part is absent, the whole body suffers as a result. God has created us in such a way that we all can help to build the kingdom of God on earth. Thought for the Day: Bake something for a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for the gifts you have given us. Teach us to use our gifts to glorify you. Amen. Prayer Focus: Grandparents. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.— 1 Corinthians 12:12 (NIV) -------------------------------- SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE: 1 Corinthians 12:14-31 12:14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 12:15 If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 12:16 And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 12:17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 12:18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 12:19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 12:20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 12:21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 12:22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 12:23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 12:24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 12:25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 12:26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 12:28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 12:29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 12:30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 12:31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a stil more excellent way. -------- SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ----------- Matthew 16:26, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?—Be a part in spreading the gospel of God. Share this devotional message to your Facebook Friends. Matthew 28:18-20, Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
