FOOD FOR THE SOUL: MARCH 08, 2014 Todays Devotional (FROM UPPER ROOM): 1st Sunday in Lent Testimony of Galina Samson (Voronezh, Russia) I grew up at a time in our country when the word God was written without a capital letter. Belief in God was viewed as irrational behavior. But on a particular day every spring, homes were filled with unusual baking smells and decorated eggs; there was a festive sense in the air. I enjoyed baking kulich (Russian Easter cake) and decorating eggs. Often people went to the cemetery. In many cases, this was the only day in the year when deceased relatives were remembered. If you had a table laden with Easter dishes and had been to the cemetery, then Easter had been celebrated well. Then I came to the Lord. I discovered that decorating eggs is not important; an abundant table is not necessary; and one can visit the graves of loved ones any day. For me, Easter became a festival of light. Even if the clouds blocked the sun on Easter, the light of Christ illuminated the day. I don’t think I will ever understand the deep meaning of Christ’s coming to earth. But I can feel his endless love. And it gives me joy to know that Easter is a miracle that is directly connected to me. Thought for the Day: What does Easter mean to me? Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the miracle of the Resurrection — and that we are a part of it. Amen. Prayer Focus: Someone celebrating Easter for the first time Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch — as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.- 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV) -------------------------------- SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE: Romans 6:4-14 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 6:5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 6:7 For whoever has died is freed from sin. 6:8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 6:9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 6:10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 6:11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 6:12 Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 6:13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 6:14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. -------- SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ----------- Matthew 16:26, “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?—Be a part in spreading the gospel of God. Share this devotional message to your Facebook Friends. Matthew 28:18-20, Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
