FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The Key Truth Read Exodus 19:1 through 21:36 Emily recently came to the saving knowledge of Christ. She had lived a hard life after rejecting her parents’ attempts to raise her to serve the Lord. Often she complained of how strict this upbringing had been. As she studied Exodus 20, she began to understand why these rules were in place—her parents knew the same God who delivered Israel.“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (Exodus 20:2).God did not simply want to give Israel His Law; He wanted them to know by whose authority these laws came. The God who brought Israel its mighty deliverance now expected His people to live by His commands.Many ideas clamor for our allegiance today. Each of these ideas presents itself as the remedy to all or at least some of the main concerns in our lives. Yet none of these ideas, no matter how good they might seem, can claim what God’s Law can—being written by the Creator of the universe. We need to obey His laws because He has all authority. Prayer Suggestion: Ask God to show you the benefits of an obedient life.
