FOOD FOR THOUGHT by Philip Bonera. HOW VALUABLE IS YOUR BRAND? Businesses exist for many reasons, the main one being growth and expanding their returns on investments. At the end of a business day, any smart business owner or manager will look to see whether the venture has grown that day, in terms of revenues, brand penetration and/or share price for big listed companies. How we carry ourselves as individuals, should not be so different from the way we would run a business. Just as we would invest in a business for growth, should be the same way we should invest in ourselves. Do we go to bed at night better than we woke up, stagnant, or worse? You see, the biggest brand that you will ever have the pleasure of working on is you! How to grow that brand is in our words, actions, interactions and response to situations. We actually determine how credible, approachable and dependable we are. Every day, we build onto our individual profile as people. Most people focus on getting the good grades or that job or generally having that good time. Don’t get me wrong; I also do the same. However, it is unfortunate that there are people who are not good at being people. When everything material was suddenly stripped away from you, character and integrity is what would still carry you. It is in respecting our personal brands, that we get to respect and appreciate other people as brands. Just make sure that your brand is either the best, or as good as the best. Let us not be people who are pathetic at being people. Who we are and what our personality is determines to a very large extent how far you go. So let’s be careful before hurling that insult, rudely dismissing someone, or even hitting that stranger on the street while hurriedly walking by. As a person, you’d be then losing value. Let even of our smallest of actions, add value to who we are. Do not forget to invest in yourself, as YOU are the most important asset that you have.
