FOOTBALL Daily Mirrors Manchester football correspondent David McDonnell on Phil Jones after the United players performance against Arsenal on Sunday: When Sir Alex Ferguson, towards the end of his Manchester United reign last season, claimed Phil Jones could become the clubs greatest-ever player, there was much sniggering and rolling of eyes. Set against such iconic names as Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, and their laudable achievements, it seemed absurd to entertain the notion that Jones could even be mentioned in the same breath. Although a competent, diligent and hard-working player, Jones lacks the flair and bewitching qualities of those more illustrious names that have pulled on the famous United shirt in the past and captivated fans all over the world. But on Sunday, against Arsenal, Jones demonstrated his huge value to United, with an imperious display in two roles in each half - holding midfield and central defence - that ultimately set the tone for his sides crucial 1-0 win.
