FOR ALL THE HATERS! The History of Saint Nicolas (Sinterklaas) St. Nicolas fled to Spain in a later time of his life. He was originally a Bishop of Turkish origin and nationality! A Turkish port of considerable importance at that time. Here he became internationally famous. Because of his very unorthodox way of freeing child slaves (Black and African) from slave ships that docked in the port. He hired them as servants . The paid job of servant gave these children a independant and free status. It is THIS, that made him a friend of children through out life, and his black servants are originally intended as a symbol AGAINST slavery and oppression. A better symbol against racism than Sinterklaas there is NOT!. Maybe if more people knew this, The hate and misunderstandings will finally stop and we can all just enjoy a wonderful tradition and movement against slavery.
