***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*** ANN ARBOR, MI JOINS OTHER MAJOR US CITIES AND OVER 30 COUNTRIES TO ‘MARCH AGAINST MONSANTO’ FOR A THIRD TIME ON 5/24/14 This event aims to raise awareness about GMOs (Genetically Modified Foods). March Against Monsanto has announced that on May 24, millions of activists around the world will “March Against Monsanto.” Currently, marches are being planned on six continents, in 36 countries, totaling events in over 250 cities. Ann Arbor will join the global movement 5/24/14 @ 1 pm at Liberty Square Plaza at the corner of Division & Liberty. We will assemble at Liberty Square for a peaceful march around downtown. After the march, we will gather back at Liberty Square for an informative rally. We have expert guest speakers and organizations in attendance such as Courtney Clausen (COVVHA) and Jeff Jones (Candidate for congress). Community members are coming together via Facebook to join in the effort, exercise their First Amendment rights and bring awareness to the growing controversy over ethical concerns surrounding the political influence of the multinational biotech corporation Monsanto and the safety of the genetically modified foods it produces. On May 25th,2013 we had over 1000 people marching peacefully through Ann Arbor and this time around we expect that number to be 2000. It should also be mentioned that the city of Ann Arbor denied our permit for a peaceful protest but we intend to practice our rights regardless of government approval. Why do we march? Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects. In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-lead research on the long-term effects of GMO products. Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds. For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup. Monsantos GMO seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have caused colony collapse among the worlds bee population.
