Presented by Comcast | NBC Universal & Honest Engine Films LOS ANGELES,CA (November 15, 2013) â Red Nation Film Festival Awards Show was held November 11, in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Theatre NoHo 7. There were more native feature films produced this year, more then any other time in history, stated RNFF founder Joanelle Romero. We are bankable, and marketable, at the end of day itâs about the numbers, and we now have them, Native films are on the rise! In attendance *Benicio Del Toro* opened RNFF with Jimmy P. During the Awards ceremony, while accepting his award *Saginaw Grant* spoke about The Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp and received a standing ovation, as did Tribute Award honoree *Sylvia McAdam Saysewahum*, co-founder of Idle No More movement, with her soulful speech to standing up and protecting our land, our water, our women. Before *Theda Newbreast* received her Award for Best Documentary Short and the Humanitarian Award Larry Grounds (Crazy Dog Society), sang a traditional sang. Our traditional voice lives and is very much alive, the message was clear during the evening when Charlie Soap Wilma Mankillers husband and director of The Cherokee Word for Water in accepting his award he stated Native women continue to speak up and know that you are supported. As one actress stated Carla Rae Holland (star of Chris Eyres Imprint) quoted Being at Red Nation Awards Show was like being on Holy Ground. There were traditional medicine people in attendance, elders, celebrities A. Martinez, Alma Martinez (to name a few), actors, producers, directors and musicians. Performances by Steve Garica Eagle dancer opened the evening, Award-winning actress Sage of Sage and the Saints (Country Rock Singer) and Scatter Their Own (Rock band from South Dakota). The awards show ended with Native Youth Matter, young voices of Cheyenne & Tate Garica sharing how important and inspirational Red Nation Film Festival is to native youth.
