FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: EPF joins interfaith leaders in urging Pope Francis to call for justice in Palestine during his May visit to Holy Land Ithaca, New York – The Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF) joins 19 Episcopal bishops – current and retired including former Presiding Bishops Edmond Browning and Frank Griswold III – as well as Nobel Laureates Desmond Tutu and Mairead Maquire – and Bonnie Anderson, past President of the House of Deputies – in calling for Pope Francis to speak out against Israel government injustices toward the Palestinian people especially the suffering of their youth during his upcoming visit to the Holy Land in May. “In an Ash Wednesday Open Letter to Pope Francis more than 200 faith leaders from throughout the world implored him to speak out against the UNICEF-documented Israeli army’s programming of kidnapping, detention and systematic abuse of Palestinian children aged 12 to 18,” said the Rev. Allison Liles, EPF executive director. “While Pope Francis will pray at the Western Wall (aka Wailing Wall) in Jerusalem’s Old City as did his two predecessors – Popes John Paul II and Benedict – we urge him to also speak out against the occupation and colonization of Palestine in front of the Israeli government-named hafrada (separation) wall that symbolizes that country’s suppression of its neighbor. A link to read the letter to the Pope, as well as a list of interfaith religious leaders who have expressed their support of Sabeel’s request, is on the EPF website epfnational.org/action-groups/israelpalestine/ash-wednesday-letter-to-pope-francis/
