FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Huu-ay-aht Grassroots Citizens and Supporters Organize to Oppose Proposed Steelhead LNG Project Anacla Village, Huu-ay-aht Treaty Settlement Lands (November 22, 2014) Grassroots Citizens of Huu-ay-aht First Nation have announced their formal opposition to the proposed Steelhead LNG proposed being considered by the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. This proposed project would be located on lands that contain the Sarita River and Sarita Bay. The Sarita lands have been previously been considered the “Heart of the Huu-ay-aht” and was the focus of intensive efforts to restore the Sarita River. These lands hold the roots of many Huu-ay-aht families and are considered Sacred by families living in Anacla Village. Stella Peters, a Huu-ay-aht citizen who organized a facebook group named “Say “No” to LNG in Bamfield Sarita Area” said “We need to show WE CARE about the lands & the waterways in Barkley Sound, Bamfield- Sarita areas. The lands & waters are home of a very important food chain, which is a key link to First Nations & Non-first Nations People. We come from a background as being cultural, spiritual, & living off the lands & waters, in a sustainable manner, by not overharvesting or disrupting all that the Creator (Naas) has provided for us, we have been taught to treat the Lands (nismaa) with Respect (iisaak). Stella Peters further elaborated that Barkley Sound is recognized as being a critical center and hub for First Nations & Non First Nations people as part of their livelihood. The impacts from this proposed project are unacceptable. These unacceptable risks include impacts upon harvesting traditional foods and resource gathering such as fish, shellfish, the importance of commercial fishing/sports fishing, ecotourism and educational ecological tours, research habitat, the marine gateway for salmon runs, and a historic route of Traditional Canoe Journeys.” The Huu-ay-aht citizens are scheduled to vote at their Annual People’s Assembly on November 29. 2014. The People’s Assembly will be held at the Barkley Hotel in Port Alberni in the Traditional Territories of the Tseshaht and Huupachasaht First Nations.
