Wendy Longman, owner of Windsong Charters & Boat Rentals in New Port Richey, asked her FaceBook friends for only one thing on her birthday last week, “Every Happy Birthday wish I get will equal $1 and be given to a local charity.” Happy to oblige and within a few hours, Longman had received over 500 birthday wishes from friends, family, colleagues and clients. The final tally of well wishers equaled $642.00. Her next post was to ask which local charity should receive the funds? Hundreds more suggestions were made regarding who Longman’s money would benefit. Putting all votes in a fish bowl a drawing out a worthy name, Longman felt the money could be split between two worthy charities. Several of Longman’s FaceBook friends requested the name of the charities so they could make checks out as well, as a gesture of Longman generosity in the community. Both charities have been notified of the gift and checks will be disbursed on August 5th, 2014 at 5:30PM at Windsong Charters & Boat Rentals Marina. This Ribbon Cutting Event will celebrate the 12 year old company’s new location at 5015 US Hwy. 19 @ Magnuson Hotel & Marina (Formerly the Ramada Inn) in New Port Richey. Rev. Dan Campbell of Metropolitan Ministries in Holiday, FL and Ms. Madeline Robinson of Wheelchairs 4 Kids in Tarpon Springs, FL each will each receive a check for $321.00. Longman’s hope is more small business owners will give back to the community using creative ideas and social media.
