FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sacramento Comedy Spot Celebrates Ten Years of Laughter SACRAMENTO, January 8, 2015 – The Sacramento Comedy Spot celebrates its 10th anniversary and shows no signs of slowing down. The venue is host to improv, stand-up, podcasts, and sketch comedy shows seven nights a week. Exciting changes and improvements are in store for 2015, including rebranding with a new logo design, new house sketch program, new state-of-the-art lighting system, and an emphasis on the Comedy Spot’s Comedy School. Celebrations will continue throughout the year. Annual event staples, the 48-Hour Comedy Marathon, Sacramento Comedy Festival, and ZOMBIE The Musical will return in March, September, and October respectively. Enhancing the calendar will also be national headlining comedians like the hilarious Cameron Esposito, appearing in October, and new weekly and monthly house shows like Cage Match, Sketch Mix, and the Comedy Spot Sketch Revue. In late 2014, the Comedy Spot completely reimagined the Sketch Comedy Program and created a system for developing sketch comedy that is the first of its type in the nation. Performers who complete the sketch comedy courses are invited to participate in the Sketch Workshop, which is a collaborative community of sketch writers and performers developing sketches for the Comedy Spot’s weekly sketch show, Sketch Mix. The Sketch Workshop will also include filmmakers who will be developing sketches specifically for an online audience. The best sketches from Sketch Mix are then placed on the monthly Comedy Spot Sketch Revue show. The largest focus of 2015 will be the Spot’s Comedy School. The Comedy Spot is home to the largest comedy school in Northern California, with classes in improv, stand up, and sketch. New to the curriculum in 2015 will be courses in video production, musical improv, and a kids’ day camp. The Sacramento Comedy Spot was founded by local comedian Brian Crall, who has performed comedy in Sacramento since 2001. The Comedy Spot was born out of a need to find a permanent home for his sketch group, Free Hooch Comedy Troupe. Crall now seeks to make Sacramento a national destination for comedy, not only for festivals, but also education, shows, and an online presence. He envisions Sacramento as the West Coast/warmer alternative to Chicago’s comedy scene. The Comedy Spot first opened its doors at a small location on Broadway in 2005. Success and growth prompted relocation to Midtown’s MARRS building in 2009. Since then, the theater and comedy school have continued to grow and expand. In 2014, the Comedy Spot added a classroom annex called the Comedy Spot Lab, located at 1812 J Street. In addition to brick-and-mortar locations, the Comedy Spot is looking to carve out a home online with the launch of the national website, ComedySpotNation (formerly AmericasComedy). Comedy Spot Nation will be the online hub for all things comedy, with articles, podcasts, and videos. The Sacramento Comedy Spot will be a key content contributor, with affiliates from across the country added as the site progresses. Steven Bloom, founder of AmericasComedy, will be taking on other responsibilities within the Comedy Spot organization.
