FOR UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI ON UNIMA 400% FEES HIKE - We need to - TopicsExpress

FOR UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI ON UNIMA 400% FEES HIKE - We need to employ Jesus Christs principle... Until 1989, students at University of Malawi were not paying fees (free university education). Then beginning 1989 students were told to pay K1,500 per year. Then in the year 2000, the then Minister of Finance Prof. Mathews chikaonda proposed a fee hike from merely K1,500 to whooping K47,000 which made even the president nearly collapse! With some students unionists like Mathews Mtumbuka and friends they managed to convince Mathews Chikaonda to reduce the revision from K47, 000 to K25,000 per year. In the year 2011 the K25,000 per year was revised by the Unima council to K150,000 of which me and my friends from the then 5 constituent colleges students union executives shot down the proposal of K180,000 from merely K25,000 until it was reduced to the current K55,000. Now I understand the council proposes the fee hike from K55,000 to K275,000 per year. Anyway, the councils reasons for hiking the fees are always valid but not reasonable. The claim is that some students at UNIMA come from schools where they were paying almost a million kwacha per single term yet at the university the same student is paying less than 100, 000kwacha per year not per term to get university education not secondary school education. Thats quite true and valid argument but what about somebody like me who graduated from Zingwangwa secondary school where my tuition fee was only K500 (Five Hundred Kwacha)? Yes there is government loan of which some abled student also feast on the same share for the needy which made the graduates owing government K5 million kwacha by 1999, 10 years since introduction of fees in UNIMA. A cost of training one unima student per year was perked at about 2 million Kwacha per year and that instead of paying the whole K2 million per year, government subsidies the rest and leave the student to pay only K55,000. The hypocrisy of raising the fees is on the people at UNIMA Council almost all of them went through FREE UNIVERSITY EDUCATION (thus before introduction of fees in 1989) and also they are people who are receiving not less than half a million Kwacha per month so K275,000 is nothing to them. But what about my friend from Mpondasi in Mangochi, or Polioli hills in Rumphi or Ngolowindo in Salima. The issue can only be solved by employing Jesus parable of Tirigu ndi Nansongole Zilekeni zikulire limodzi basi. Mungapweteke wosalakwa OR the other way round Kalulu akabisala pa chisamba alenje amaphophola ndi chitsamba chomwecho.
