FORGIVENESS Don’t be deceived by the idiom: ‘Revenge is sweet.’ It’s anything BUT sweet. It’s fighting fire with fire, which simply means more damage and destruction. An eye for an eye makes both of us half blind. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for openly opposing Apartheid. He was frequently beaten and tortured. Then, when he finally gained his freedom in 1990, the first people he upset were his own supporters – the very people who for almost 3 decades had campaigned relentlessly for his release. They were hoping for some long awaited revenge. Mandela disappointed them by calling for forgiveness and reconciliation. Whilst many felt betrayed, “the world took note of such a powerful heart and mind.” (Janice Harper, Ph.D.) For some, revenge may seem sweet; but Nelson Mandela is a champion leader who proved that forgiveness is far, FAR sweeter!
