FORMER GOVERNOR ACHIKE UDENWA TO HEAD PDP SCREENING COMMITTEE. There were increased tensions in the camps of some aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP extraction over the appointment of erstwhile governor of Imo state Chief Achike Udenwa as the chairman of the partys screening committee. According to party sources, most aspirants are gradually withdrawing their intensions with the fear that they would probably not make the list. Therefore instead of being embarrassed out of contest, they prefer to quit. While some argued that they dont like the face of Udenwa, others accused the party leadership of secretly over empowering him and his team, insisting that he may be on revenge battle. One of the stalwarts of the party, Hon. Bright Nduka submitted that assigning such strategic portfolio to Udenwa at this critical time has some doubts and desperate under tones which calls for wisdom to enable the faithful interpret it. He pointed out that the period of Barr Anyahies leadership might be abruptly come to an end and at the same time, correct the erroneous impression that the Anyahie led government was solely installed by either Ohakim or Senator Hope Uzodinma. Speaking to Nigeria Moment at Amaifeke Orlu, the country home of former governor and chairman of the screening committee, Chief Samuel Ihekwuaba said that the house of Udenwa has turned to be little Mecca, noting that aspirants have converted the area into mega party secretariat, as the village has become more political explosive than the state party office. But he expressed fears that the party would soon collapse if the style of politics of acrimony continues to play out, maintaining that the level of schism within the rank and file would be difficult to be contained by the leaders and the committee as there was established back biting in the party even among some big shots in the party too. He said greater number of the members and aspirants were not pleased by the headship of Udenwa, alleging that members of the Onongono faction of the party would be mostly favoured. Ihekwuaba said that the appointment of Udenwa has directly or indirectly revived the group in readiness to taking over the structure of the party, adding that the group has already commenced legal process to sack the present state party officers which they alleged has lived beyond its statutory life span, being inaugurated by the immediate past governor chief Ikedi Ohakim. According to him, Udenwa and his team have tactically bounced back into the mainstream of the party politics and would sooner or later take over the administration as to determine what goes where and how as it was during his regime. He contended that only three aspirants would probably contest for the governorship position and he forecasted the three to emerge as Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, Prof. Jude Njoku and Chief Ikedi Ohakim. He declared that any two out of the three can win election for the party and one is bad market. One is incomparably and eminently qualified and would win if irregularities were checked based on his pedigree, but the other two aspirants need a lot of campaign and house cleansing before they could be accepted by greater percentage of Imo people. On the issue and aspiration of Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha and Hon Bethel Amadi, he simply submitted that the federal forces are working on them and consequently they would not go too far, citing that even the height of Ihediohas campaign has reduced and all of them were gradually withdrawing their structures and noise making.
