FORT LAUDERDALE — The St. Thomas Aquinas football appears ready for the 2014 high school football season. The Raiders rushed for 287 yards en route to a 31-7 victory over Dillard in a Kickoff Classic game at Brian Piccolo Stadium Thursday night. Aquinas opens the regular season at Sun Life Stadium against defending Class 5A State Champion American Heritage on Aug. 29. Jordan Scarlett and Devontae Henry-Cole each ran for 84 yards and a touchdown. Scarlett, an ESPN four-star prospect and Miami commit, pick up 66 of those yards on a scamper up the middle in the first quarter that gave Aquinas a 10-0 lead. Senior quarterback Jake Rizzo played deep into the third quarter, completing seven of 11 pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown. He found receiver Devante Peete for a 16-yard score in the third to make it 17-0 but also threw an interception in the first. Running back Khambrel St. Hubert made it 24-0 right before half time with an 18-yard touchdown run and Henry-Cole found the end zone in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard run. Dillard scored its only touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone by receiver James Cartwright, who dove on the loose ball after Aquinas defensive back Albert Tucker coughed it up after coming away with an interception. In addition to Tuckers interception, Velvario Faulkner also came away with a pick as Aquinass defense stifled Dillard all night. The defensive line held the Panthers rushing attack to just 13 yards and also sack Dillards trio of quarterbacks four times.
