FRAN ------------Rangers chairman refuses to confirm Derek Llambias appointed by Mike Ashley By Grant Russell 29 October 2014 Rangers chairman David Somers has declined to comment on whether Derek Llambias came recommended by Mike Ashley for his role as a consultant at the club. The former Newcastle United managing director started work at Ibrox on Tuesday, along with Sports Directs head of brands Barry Leach. Ashley strengthened his grip on Rangers at the weekend when he provided a £2m emergency loan to the club, which will see him given the right to appoint two directors to the board. Llambias is expected to be one of his men in the boardroom but chairman Somers, who says he invited both to work at the club, refused to say whether he came recommended by Ashley. Theyve just started doing their consulting, said Somers. Nothings resolved. Theyve just started doing their project for me. They will be around for a couple of weeks. Asked how he knew Llambias and Leach, the Rangers chairman responded: They came recommended for me and Ive borrowed them. Hopefully they are going to do a really good job. Pressed twice on whether Ashley gave that recommendation, Somers didnt comment.
