FRANK McAVENNIE reckons Celtics gung-ho attitude backfired in their home defeat against Salzburg. The former Hoops hero said: I noticed near the end of the game that centre-half Virgil Van Dijk had abandoned his defensive duties. He was up in attack when the Austrians scored their third goal to kill the tie. The Dutchman is not the best defender in the world, but he playing at centre-forward when they broke forward. It was too easy for them to score the clincher. Of course, Celtic needed a second goal to equalise, but if Van Dijk had stayed back he might have been there to clear the danger. Macca believes his old club will have to splash the cash in the January transfer window to strengthen the side. He added: They need to spend money on decent players. That was obvious against Salzburg - especially in the first-half - but the main thing is that they are through to the knock-out stage of the Europa League. That was the target and they have achieved that. However, they were diabolical in the opening 45 minutes. Theyve been that way more than a few times this season. After going 2-0 down early in the game, it was always going to be an uphill battle. Everyone wants Ronny Deila to do well, but hes got to get better performances. The worrying thing is I dont see any sign of a plan from the manager. I like him, but some of his decisions and substitutions dont make sense. As I said earlier, the most important thing is that Celtic are through to the next stage with a game still to play.
